Green Entrepreneurship 2 – Development of Ecotourism Destinations in Romania

Green Entrepreneurship 2 was a joint program of  the Romanian-American Foundation and the Romanian Environmental Partnership Foundation, and aimed to support the establishment and strengthening of a national ecotourism network, contributing to sustainable development at the local level and nature conservation. 

Strategic Partner: Association for Ecotourism in Romania 

Budget: 1.660.000 USD (RAF contribution:) + 1.848.000 USD (Romanian Environmental Partnership Foundation contribution).

Implementation Period: 64 months (July 1, 2014 – October 31, 2019) 

Objectives:
- Development of the national network of ecotourism destinations.
- Transforming ecotourism into a strategic development segment in at least 7 micro-regions of Romania.
- Development of management capacities in at least 7 ecotourism destinations through Ecotourism Destination Management Units (UMDs).


Achieved results:
-
7 functional UMDs created,
- 554 local entrepreneurs benefitted from the activities of the UMDs,
- 196 products and services promoted under the ecotourism destinations brand,
- 67 new businesses related to ecotourism enrolled,
- 141 new jobs created,
- over 1000 media appearances about destinations in the last five years,
- the number of tourists in destinations have increased by almost 70%,
- the average length of stay increased by 50%,
- the number of overnight stays increased by 170%,
- 4 destinations officially certified as ecotourism destinations by the Ministry of Tourism,
- a brochure about the methodology, process, and results of the program,
- promotional videos for each destination and one for the entire ecotourism network.
